Your Right to a Good Faith Estimate
Under federal law, you have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” detailing the expected costs of your healthcare services if you don’t have certain types of healthcare coverage or if you are not using your insurance. This estimate will include the total expected cost of any healthcare items or services, such as medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees.
Key Points
• If you schedule a service at least 3 business days in advance, your provider must give you a Good Faith Estimate
in writing within 1 business day.
• For services scheduled at least 10 business days in advance, you must receive the estimate in writing within 3 business days.
• You can request a Good Faith Estimate before scheduling a service, and it must be provided in writing within
3 business days of your request.
If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than the Good Faith Estimate provided, you have the right to dispute the bill. Be sure to keep a copy of both the Good Faith Estimate and the bill.
